Hutto put up little resistance against Shadow Creek, which overwhelmed the Hippos nearly every way possible on Friday night.

Hutto couldn’t ward off the Shark attack. Junior quarterback Kyron Drones accounted for five touchdowns – four passing – to engineer a 63-14 victory to keep Shadow Creek unbeaten. It was all Shadow Creek in a Class 5A Division I Region III area round playoff game at Waller ISD Stadium.

“We had a lot of respect for Hutto, last few years they’ve been right in the mix in the playoffs,” Shadow Creek coach Brad Butler said. “We wanted to get off to a quick start and we did. Great to come out in a cold, brisk night and get a win.”

The Sharks’ lopsided victory sets up a potential rematch next week with District 10-5A rival Foster, who Shadow Creek defeated 24-17 on Oct. 24. Foster plays Georgetown on Saturday in Bryan.

Shadow Creek (12-0), a state finalist in 2018, is poised for another playoff run. The Sharks controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage in dominating Hutto (9-2), which couldn’t recover from four first-half turnovers and totaled minus-2 yards rushing on 29 carries for the game.

Drones threw touchdown passes of 42 and 16 yards to Jared Jackson, a 33-yard scoring pass to C.J. Guidry, and a 12-yard scoring pass to Seth Jones – all in the first half.

In last week’s 49-7 pounding of Port Arthur Memorial in bi-district, Drones scored six times with four touchdown passes.

For good measure on Friday, Kelvon Brown scored on a 52-yard run around left end for the Sharks on the third play of the third quarter to expand on a 42-7 halftime lead. Brown ran for 178 yards and two scores.

Shadow Creek’s stellar defense took advantage of the Hippos’ four first-half miscues in building the 35-point halftime advantage. Sharks linebacker Warren Shankle recovered two opening-half fumbles.

“We showed a lot of effort, we flew around,” Shankle said. “We key our team on defense. We play fast, we play physical. This is a big win for us going into next week.”

Linebacker Beau Burns returned a fumble 62 yards for a fourth fumble touchdown to put an exclamation point on the easier-than-expected win.

Shankle wasn’t the only defensive stopper for the Sharks. Linemen Alec Bryant and Ryan Williams were a force, as was outside linebacker C.J. Brown.

Drones and Brown jump-start the offense, but defense is the Sharks’ calling card. For the season, Shadow Creek has outscored the opposition 604-94. The Sharks have registered three shutouts and have held eight teams to under 10 points.

“We got a lot of speed out there and got a unit that has really come together,” Butler said. “They’ve played well all year.”

Hutto, which turned the ball over six times, was at a minus-25 yards rushing at one point in the first half and finished with 173 yards passing. Only one opponent has been within seven points of the Sharks, and that was Foster.

“Our guys get there in a bad mood,” Butler said. “We’re focused on being great tacklers and sometimes that ball gets out of there when you tackle pretty well.”

Drones passed for 161 yards, with 155 yards coming in the first half in which the Sharks scored touchdowns on four of their first six possessions. He also scored on a 7-yard run.

Shadow Creek’s first score – a 33-yard strike to Guidry in the end zone from Drones, came on fourth-and-20.
